Vic: Chinese computer hackers access classified government files

Chinese computer hackers have launched targeted attacks on classified federal government
computer networks.

Fairfax newspapers reports the cyber attacks have prompted an internal review of IT security.

It says the hacking activity is thought to be part of an international espionage operation
.. in a bid to glean intelligence from the western world.

And Australian intelligence figures are believed to be concerned at a growing level
of industrial espionage.

The attacks are believed to be directed at local companies .. and occurred late last year.

But it's thought the attacks haven't acquired sensitive information .. and a government
intelligence source says he wouldn't characterise the attempts as malicious .. just routine
espionage.

A Department of Defence spokesman wouldn't confirm or deny the recent cyber attacks
on key government agencies.

And a Chinese government spokesman denies any cyber espionage had been authorised for
any Australian agencies.
