SA: Rising power prices putting lives at risk, say Democrats

The Australian Democrats say rising power prices in South Australia could lead to a
jump in heat-related illnesses or deaths as people limit the use of air-conditioners.

Democrats state leader SANDRA KANCK says electricity prices are set to increase tomorrow,
with the introduction of a higher summer tariff.

Ms KANCK is concerned the increased price of electricity will force many, particularly
the elderly and young families, to forgo air-conditioning on very hot days.

She says 21,800 people died as a result of cold weather in Britain last winter, partly
due to the high cost of heating, and there's a concern the reverse situation could occur
in SA.
